  • As a ux/ui nerd for me its mostly that its a very thoughtful user experience. I have been more or less good at the terminal at different points in time, but if you don’t spend much time there its easy to forget every command and how to do things. And ultimately, I don’t really enjoy using it as an interface. Its a blank void with little to nothing in the way of affordances-- remember the magic words and you can do anything. But the fact its only used by technical folks means often no one cares to add affordances or ease of use even when it might be possible, and when they do its from a power user perspective.

Fish feels like a much more thoughtful execution of how to interact with a command line interface, and doesnt require a ton of time spent in a terminal to achieve that better ux. Though I still want to set up a nice prompt that improves legibility and make things a bit easier still, I just haven’t played with starship enough yet.

There are more things I’d wish for in a perfect world, but for me fish is a very nice step in the right direction :)

  • Folks may not like me saying this but some of this may be pretty common across linux distros, at least in my experience, though much of this feels like it may be desktop environment specific. May also be impacted by your specific hardware setup. It feels like technical folks kinda just don’t notice small polish issues or jank at times 😅

Your best bet would be to throw fedora or other options on a flash drive and try them out. You should be able to see if many/all of these issues exist on another distro/desktop without installing :)

Best of luck, I hope you find an option thats more suitable to you :)

  • On that subject of social skills not being my dump stat- if I include myself in the group I’m critisizing (WE have this issue, vs YOU GUYS have this issue) it is less confrontational and more people will be able to connect with what I’m saying and think about it. Its more effective verbiage

And ultimately I’m part of this culture too, dysfunction and all, and want it to be healthier :) trying to use my social skills to support that change is a way that I can contribute, even if I can’t contribute technical expertise

I do maybe wanna contribute to UI design work for Foss/floss stuff someday though ☺️

  • Yeah I think its a balancing act. That’s why with this kind of thing I prefer to just share my excitement with people without expectations that they wanna engage with it the same way I do

I think you can share what makes linux special and expose people to the idea without it needing to be badgering. Which I’m sure works for some folks who are open to the idea, but it also just fuels kinda tribalistic antagonistism and resentment in many cases

It took a long time for one of my friends and I to be able to have conversations about linux cause she got so burned out by the prosthelytizing she’d gotten previously that she was defensive, and I got defensive that I couldnt easily talk about the thing I’m excited about. I’m really excited that these days I can just tell her about the shit I think is cool without her feeling like I’m demanding something of her :) yesterday we had a lovely conversation about social media and the fediverse ☺️

  • I’m a fan of it for the way that it treats me with respect and represents the possibility of technology that isnt extractive and abusive. And as a ui nerd there is an element of the computing foundation that is exciting to me in and of itself :) I love seeing the different ui paradigms of different desktop environments and how they solve problems like making multitasking work well for users

But that just how I relate to it, it’s totally valid for the computer or os to be more of a means to an end for people :)

  • Yeah as a huge linux fan we gotta be honest with ourselves 😅 we’re kinda fuckin insufferable at times

I think a lot of the technical folks who built the space made interpersonal skills kind of a dump stat- and to be fair, I benefit enormously from the technical ability they have in exchange for that lack of social skill. But it does define the culture of Foss spaces in a bunch of ways that aren’t the greatest 😅

  • It does not mean Firefox can no longer be installed or run on non-certified or rooted Android devices, but it might mean that users on non-certified or rooted devices can’t access all AI features in Firefox for Android.

For those curious it’s just used for ai features. Plenty of valid reasons to be frustrated with Mozilla anyway though (its valid even just to be unhappy they implemented it at all, even in a limited way. It still normalizes the usage of the integrity check)

  • Yeah, in a perfect world artists would not have to pay bills to survive, though I don’t know that thats really an art specific problem. If a company finds a novel way to exploit steel workers, that does happen within the backdrop of those people deserving to survive even if they can’t produce monetary value for someone else, but it feels a bit like it misses the immediate actionable harm, in favor of the less easily addressed bigger picture problem

But you’re not wrong, the underlying structural issue is people’s ability to survive being predicated on ones commercial viability, and the most commercially viable path is always rent seeking behavior and hiring people you will pay less than the ammount of value they create

With respect to surveillance, even in my limited usage I’ve shared a hugely valuable ammount of information from the perspective of understanding me as a consumer. Though, I do very much see a huge implication for regular old surveillance as well.

All companies in the us right now are operating within an environment where they need to kiss the ring, and where kissing the ring passionately enough can be competitively advantageous to them as a company, and beneficial to their bottom line. If the government comes knocking and asks an ai company to give them data, whether to create a case against a specific individual, or for access to ongoing usage activity/data sharing with federal agencies, they have very good reason to consider that course. And my understanding is that they are free to just say yes as long as their TOS doesnt preclude it.

(Sorry, I’m really long winded lol 😅)
