You can (at least the last time I ran an install) get both 10 and 11 installed without a Microsoft account, 11 just requires this process to do it. If you have an old ISO of 11 around it should allow a local account if you don’t connect to the internet, but they apparently patched that out now.

I had been talking with someone else on here about trying EVE in that playstyle a while back! I never tried it, but it always sounded interesting. Logistics sounds like it could be an interesting thing to try in Foxhole, I may need to give it a go.

I generally just don’t play a lot of online games anymore. I have a job where I have to deal with people all day, so the last thing I want to do is go home and deal with angry people while I’m trying to relax!

I do play some Elder Scrolls Online and Star Trek Online, but I primarily do single player content. The normal extent of my interaction with human players is to help them if they need help, or to thank them if they help me.

I keep looking at Foxhole, but I’ve never tried it yet. Is the non combat segment of the game pretty chill overall? I’m not really a big fan of competitive MMOs, but the behind the scenes aspect does interest me. I hear about a decent amount of positivity in the playerbase, but I’ve definitely heard negativity about the recent state of the game.

I would just try it and see what you think of it! It’s completely free. Minetest is the program you install on your computer, and then there are lots of different games that you can download and try inside of Minetest. There’s more besides Minecraft-likes that you can try, and there are definitely mods available. I never modded Minecraft though, so I’m not sure how they compare.

As to system requirements, it could run pretty well on a six year old Android phone the last I tried. It might be worth a shot on your laptop! Be aware that it’ll probably be a somewhat different experience than Minecraft, but not necessarily in a bad way!

Yes, it’s certainly changed for the worse since I’ve played it. I quit fairly soon after they announced that I would need to eventually migrate to a Microsoft account. Seeing some of the things they’ve done since then doesn’t make me miss it!

I haven’t had the urge to play it recently, so I haven’t tried it since the name change. I heard they were diverging a bit from being a Minecraft clone, are there many large changes?

I primarily prefer it because it does pretty much all the Minecraft stuff I want it to do, and it’s got other games available as well. Plus, completely Linux compatible and no Microsoft account!

What pushed me over the edge was how much worse the user experience became with 8 & 10.

I really disliked the lack of control over updates, settings and defaults being reverted after minor updates, and the constant pushing of Microsoft accounts and services. The data collection and privacy issues certainly didn’t help either. I switched from 7 to 10 for a period of time, but eventually started using Linux for everything except for games. I started realizing just how good Linux gaming was getting, and I eventually had one too many issues with my Windows partition and just quit using it entirely.

I don’t remember having a lot of the frustrations I hear some talk about when switching, but I think that was because early on I realized I just needed to start figuring out the Linux way of doing things rather than bringing my Windows experience over.

I’m amazed by how well many games run on the Deck. You obviously can’t have every graphic setting cranked, but it’s still pretty good.

I’m not sure of the reasons why other people don’t like the games, but for me it’s primarily just not being pulled into the story and world. So far I’ve tried Horizon: Zero Dawn, Spiderman Remastered, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves, and God of War, and the only one I actually finished and liked was Uncharted. Horizon I liked the gameplay and world fairly well, but the story was a bit boring. The others I put a number of hours into and quit because I wasn’t enjoying myself. I didn’t have super high expectations of any of them, so I don’t think it’s that. They may just not be my kind of game anymore, although I do like some games that are somewhat similar.

Oh yes, those are a lot of fun! It does add a lot to the game. Just a warning, I’ve found them to be a bit buggy at times, so I would recommend doing a save before taking one. They may have fixed it since I took one though.

I would have a problem with a game that sells premium bullets, because as I said in my previous comment, it gives an actual gameplay advantage when playing against other players. Which means it’s what I would call pay to win, and means I wouldn’t play it. To this point I’ve played several free to play games fairly extensively, but never spent a cent on them.

You have a different definition of pay to win than the other poster and I do, and while I don’t agree with it, that’s fine. My primary purpose for responding to your comment was to try to explain what they were referring to. I’m not trying to start a big argument over a game that I don’t even play, so I won’t be going any further with this.

That’ll bring you quite a few hours of enjoyment I’m sure! I’ve got a lot of hours into both of those games.

You can pay to get things done more quickly, but you don’t have to pay to win. It just takes more time. From what I hear from players of the game, there’s no actual gameplay advantages locked behind a paywall, only cosmetic items. They obviously want you to pay to proceed faster, but it doesn’t appear to be like some games that make free players use lower tier weapons and items. You can earn all gameplay items through grinding it out and never need to spend any money.
