At least for me, I’m now here 100%.
Good to know!
Personally, for the most part I left Reddit even before the Lemmy exodus. But this was the final straw. Since then, full time Lemmy.
There will always be one more thing.
Every time it happens, the stream of people becomes less … pleasant on average. Not to say there aren’t still good people that might come over, but the people that come at this point are pretty accepting of toxicity and are more likely to spread it.
Lemmy has already hit critical mass. More people means more bots, state actors, and trolls. But it also means more memes and small subs.
we could use more niche community/games, but we’re self sustaining for sure
I hope so
Only if the affected users know about the existence of lemmy, and many of them likely do not. If you happen to still be using reddit, you should use it to shill lemmy, hopefully in a diversity of subreddits so that lemmy doesn’t become any more of an echo chamber than it already is.
All of my comments on Reddit mentioning Lemmy got shadow banned.
Problem here is it relies on people using redit after having found lemmy. I know some people do, but I can only imagine it’s a one-way valve for most.
i only remember lemmy was a thing, when the API disaster happened after i got banned, people were really freaking out how to get back in reddit.
The Reddit is Fun app told me to migrate to Lemmy because it was being shut down. I never heard of Reddit alternatives before that.
they will just go to instagram or tiktok, unfortunately.
I’m doing my part, and if you still use reddit make sure to use an ad blocker and a VPN at least to make it harder to get any revenue from you.
they already aggressively starting to force a login popup, and also trying to redirect old reddit to new reddit. there ultimate goal is to make people use the APP.
Anyone else remember when forums were just for having fun, not making the owners money or collecting data? Can’t believe it used to be that way.
it still is, you are on a one! :)
Yes, and
their ultimate goal is to
make people use the APPmonetise every single interactionAlso, recently they require you to login to access old reddit where previously you could browse without logging in. They do not require a valid email address (yet) to create an account, so while not a total crap show, it is rapidly approaching.
This change is what led me to do a search for alternatives to reddit in which Lemmy here was suggested.other browser forks seem unaffected, while another will force the login each time.(with the old reddit redirect), and a extension that makes old reddit usable on mobile.
Yeah the forced log in is super annoying. I’ll browse the homepage and immediately get a pop up asking me to download the app and make an account.
Super annoying since that site has more of the answers to most questions typed into Google.
It’ll be both good and bad if it happens.
While it’ll be great for the threadiverse to have more growth it will inevitably put us in the crosshairs of bot farms and AI data farmers.
I plan on going to smaller fediverse graphs if it ever gets too mainstream around here.
The moment I see a fuckin brand I am out. Joining whatever network has a zero tolerance policy for that corporate fuckery.
well I have some bad news for you. https://engineering.fb.com/2024/03/21/networking-traffic/threads-has-entered-the-fediverse/
I remember threads… Didn’t everyone p much defederate from them? At least they’re not in my network anymore.
I don’t recall ever seeing a single thing from them except a couple posts when they were first coming online.
In the future, platforms like lemmy will probably have to find privacy-respecting ways of verifying that someone is a human. There are ways to prove someone is an actual human without relying on digital technologies at all. If you’re trying to prove humanity and not using human solutions, you’re going to fail.
this may be the one, mastodon is mature and lemmy 1.0 is almost out… but I fear we may need lemmy 1.1 for it to actually be a good experience, since 1.0 is such a big breaking change.
i’ve started recommending feddit.org (my lemmy instance) to people that i know irl, but the difficulty is the content: too much politics (especially trump and others), and not enough shitpost.
i try that too but its so hard to get people who are used to endless doom scrolling on reddit to accept the fact that u can scroll lemmy for 20min 2x per day and then u done (thats a good thing tho). Its even worse for the insta brained ones…
instagrammers are a lost case …
Ugh yeah that’s like half the people I know irl. I don’t get it
Infinite scroll + influencer slop + real world news = crabs in a bucket.
They can’t stand to not be able to see each other’s favorite reels and react back. If it weren’t so rotted and full of spyware it would be a laudable way to stay in connected. I consider it the empty calories of friendship.
Be mindful that that is a Germany-based right-wingoid cesspit that supports and excuses the Israel genocide of Palestinians, all under the guise that “legally they can’t ever be as evil as us, the Nazis”.
Whoa, source?
The fediverse itself. It made quite the rounds on the grapevine for a few months. During their moment of simping for Israel in the Palestine conflict, Germany passed a law regarding “Nazi Exceptionalism” too, that basically punishes people for suggesting anyone could even try to be as evil as Nazis were, and was largely part of the rationale.
yeah thank you for informing me about the details of the instance that i’ve been using for checks note 4 years and am very well familiar with
also the feddit.org controversy about israel was mostly overblown. idk, probably 1 mod’s personal views got exaggerated as “the whole platform thinks like this”
I can’t wait for another wave of posters who refer to “this administration” and numbered amendments regardless of topic or international context.
Fr murricans can’t fathom being in an international space.
Oh ya well, go back to your country. Oh you already live there? Well…keep doing that!
Greetings From Santiago de chile.
Feels like I’ve been here forever but however old my lemmy account is is how long I’ve been off reddit.
I wonder if accounts that are 18 years old will also be required to be verified.
Google did it so I assume they will
wait so google already implemented age verification? wtf?
They did years ago, but it’s only asked to access specific content or features
google’s login requirement conincides with reddits login popups, (reddit depends on google). one of thier current method is limiting the amount of accounts per device.
Source? Does it ?
reddit is killing anonymous access to old.reddit. users from certain countries were asked to verify their identity.
reddit has been forcing login popups, and app downloads on most peoples browsers. not all of them though.
Fitting: another Eternal September https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September
Imbrace fo the impact !
Why should we care what people that are still using Reddit do or don’t do do?
Sorry, but anybody still there deserves whatever shit they get.
Because if they decide to come here it will affect us?
Ultimately, whatever will be will be.
