Greece is going all in on Israeli weapons while Israel is accused of genocide in Gaza. It approved its biggest ever Israeli arms purchase, $760m for PULS rocket systems. Now it’s negotiating direct government-to-government deals for up to €3.1bn more, skipping competitive bidding so nobody else can offer alternatives. Greece is a member of the European Sky Shield Initiative, but it isn’t buying those systems. Instead, officials say the rest of its €2.8bn Shield of Achilles budget could go to Israeli systems. Critics say Greece is copying Israel’s defence model and becoming the second-most heavily armed state in the east Mediterranean. And its own state defence companies are described as unable to borrow or hire properly, so the co-production talk looks less like a real industrial plan and more like a way to keep sending money to Israel while avoiding open tenders and human rights concerns.
