Attestation for passkeys (software-based, syncable credentials) is antithetical to their mass market goals, and would freeze out independent, non-corporate-backed credential managers. It’s an explicit non-goal of the designers of passkeys, who work together in a forum anyone can join.

Let’s look at the web. Originally Tim-Berners Lee envisioned an open web, adopted by the mass market, and not controlled by a single entity. W3C was created as a standards body, that anybody can join. Sounds like passkeys right?

Except Google Chrome monopolized the market, commandeered web standards, and made them so complex that other browsers (Firefox) could not keep up, making other browsers look outdated and cementing their place as a monopoly. Classic “embrace, extend, extinguish”.

This is exactly what could happen with passkeys. Corporate-backed passkeys begin to dominate, the corporations take control of the standards and add complexity until other passkey implementations fall behind, many websites drop support for those outdated passkeys, and the monopoly is established.

Then the government madates hardware attestation of passkeys, for things like hardware-backed id and age verification, and privacy is completely eradicated.
