Does anyone bridge their threadiverse account to bluesky? I can’t imagine how disorienting it would be for your average Bluesky user to randomly come across a reply to a post from a piefed thread, for instance.

Technology@lemmy.world•When Escalator Breaks, It Turns StairsEnglish
34·6 days ago“An escalator can never break: it can only become stairs. You should never see an Escalator Temporarily Out Of Order sign, just Escalator Temporarily Stairs. Sorry for the convenience.” – Mitch Hedberg
In software, it’s important to think about whether you should fail open or fail shut.
Personally, I prefer it when authors promote their own work – it’s nice to be able to ask questions about it directly.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•PieFed Flagship Instance Shadowbanning Instances from Discoverability & Other Questionable UpdatesEnglish
391·7 days agoI’m not gonna get into this one, but as a rule, if you’re on one of the default instances for a given fediverse service, such as mastodon.social, you should be using it to actively shop for a smaller instance more closely aligned with your interests.

1·12 days ago“The Jews could have prevented the holocaust if they’d just played devil’s advocate a little harder” is one of the most morally reprehensible takes I’ve ever seen in an online space, and one I simply cannot believe anyone can make in good faith.

141·13 days agoI’m not certain that spending time on networks that are “void of lgbt, void of the trans” is the doctor that these people need to cure them of their transphobia and homophobia.

Technology@lemmy.world•AI's Economics Don't Make SenseEnglish
111·17 days agoI hope Rimu can figure out how to make Piefed run on GPUs because we are absolutely going to have to bail out these tech companies when the AI bubble pops, and when we do we’re gonna nationalize these shitty data centers and turn them into the biggest fediverse deployment you’ve ever seen (I’m mostly joking. Mostly).

Technology@lemmy.world•The AI Revolution Could Usher In a New Age of StagnationEnglish
28·26 days agoI’m not sure there’s any more depressing climax I could imagine to this story:
While the talk of eradicating friction or even rents suggests a “freeing up” of capital for more productive investment, given services would follow manufacturing into a realm of hyperproductive overcapacity, there would seem to be no upside to the euthanasia of the rentier in this instance.
Rather than “free up” business, this development would destroy it. Capital may well be a parasite, but in the absence of revolutionary pressure it is still work-producing. Our jobs might be bullsh-t, but without them there is only unemployment and (even more) poverty.

Linux@programming.dev•Oh No! Now A Federal Bill Wants OS-Level Age Verification for Everyone in the USAEnglish
29·1 month agoThere is no “age verification” possible, only identity verification that reveals your age. Once OSes have kill switches installed that operate based on your identity, it’s a pretty straight line to enforcing that only the “right people” have access to computers.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Why you should stop unnecessarily making image posts on the fediverseEnglish
27·1 month agoLow quality and easy to digest are orthogonal concerns. You can have high-quality posts that are easy to digest and low quality posts that are hard to digest. We shouldn’t make grocery bags heavier to increase the average person’s upper body strength, even if it would work.

4·2 months agoSo easy! If you wanna get paid, just already be getting paid et voila:
The best defence against this is to have lot of paying sponsors!
