I had to create an account on a government website. The website didn’t list a character limit so I used a password manager to generate a 32 character password. My account was created but I couldn’t log in. I used the “forgot my password” option and I received an email of my password in plain text. I also noticed why I couldn’t log in. The password was truncated to just 20 characters. Brilliant website! Tax dollars at work!

I’m assuming they mean tracking Linux users is difficult since most distributions don’t have any kind of telemetry or tracking and there’s no company keeping track of their user count like Microsoft or Apple. However, it’s not like it’s impossible.

Same here. There’s nothing tying me to Windows other than that’s what I already have installed. Microsoft already announced a forced upgrade to Windows 11 next year. If I’m being forced to change my OS anyways I’m going to pick a Linux distro.

The letters are the front are the protocol you’re accessing the site through. http is for unencrypted webpages and https is for encrypted web pages.

For a webpage to be encrypted they need a certificate from a certificate authority which verifies the person who asks for the certificate actually runs the server they want the certificate for. The page you link doesn’t have a certificate and so the web page cannot be accessed with https. Your browser should tell you a secure connection could not be made with the server. That’s what it does for me.

If you’re getting a different page you probably have a virus which is serving fake certificates to your browser and redirecting your traffic to a scam server. You probably shouldn’t be typing passwords into your browser until you fix that.

Lemmy isn’t really an echo chamber. It’s like saying going over to a friends place is an echo chamber because you and your friend get along. There’s nothing wrong with hanging out with people who share your values and beliefs.

The problem with social media are their algorithms. They aren’t designed to connect you with like-minded people, but to keep you engaged. The content that keeps people engaged tends to be terrible content.

The recent “a man or a bear” trend is a perfect example. Algorithms love divisive content like that because it drives engagement, but it also leads to people getting really upset over nothing. Lemmy doesn’t have any algorithms driving engagement so it doesn’t have that problem.

I don’t even work for Sony and “you need to create a third party account to play our game” isn’t something I expected to generate 300k negative reviews in 3 days. There are a lot of games that come with third party accounts and launchers. With all the shit companies like EA, Epic, and Ubisoft force onto their players, I’m genuinely surprised this caused any pushback.

Right? This game requires users install a kernel-level anti-cheat in order to run. That’s a huge privacy and security risk just to play a non-competitive video game. Nobody seemed to care about that, but signing up for PlayStation Network? That’s where gamers draw the line!

I didn’t get the game because it’s packed full of all the terrible corporate stuff you see in terrible corporate games. Always Online, Rootkit anticheat, in-game store to purchase items when the game is already expensive. I doubt adding “must give your information to Sony” is going to be the tipping point for anyone who is fine with everything else.

The Pentagon needs to have Elon Musk sit in on their Russia-Ukraine meetings because he owns 50% of all satellites in orbit and if he wanted to he could single handedly sway the war effort. Some guy with money literally bought his way into top level Pentagon meetings.
