I don’t think it’s a year to setup the software. Rather a year to load it lol. I’ve spent probably close to 4 years loading content into my Plex server and I don’t see any end in sight.
You can make up all the reasons you want, the end result is the same. People use windows because the product works better and more reliably. If you want to split hairs be my guest but every metric windows wins against Linux in gaming. It has a higher user base, more software, better support, and as you said even entire businesses developing stuff for it because businesses go where the customers are. Sure you can say “oh they just greased some palms”, but if you knew anything about the gaming world that doesn’t mean jack shit if your games and hardware sucks. The graveyard of failed hardware and software prove that. As much as I love steam and I’m glad the steam deck is having success every other Linux based hardware attempt they’ve come up with has failed hard like their console and steam link. And what’s your point about some games running better? Some games run worse too, beyond the fact your statement admits not every game runs better, how does that make Linux superior? Your example about companies also doesn’t disprove anything because a company can do that…but hasn’t in the entire 40+ years of Linux existence…curious isn’t it? Also you can program driver’s for windows too for devices lol, how else do you think people tinker with stuff? I mean I’m using a PS3 eye as a webcam on my Windows PC rn with custom community made drivers just like Linux does …
Sure, games. Proton/wine came a long ways but it’s far from perfect or has the same depth of software as native windows. Also potentially having to mess with lutris can be annoying. Graphics drivers are also better on windows too. If you’d like to try to argue this just look at protondb. Is it a 100% compatible with every title? No? Hmmm… Not to mention proton triggering some games anti cheats.
It’s also why there are several memes including the one posted just yesterday or the day before about “cheating” on Linux with windows for gaming. Plus the whole standard advice ive seen on Lemmy being “Linux for daily driving, windows partition for gaming.” Now again, why would that be the standard advice? https://lemmy.world/post/5834366

Linux is fine, windows is okay if you disable the telemetry, just use what ever os and software you want but it’s really silly to make false claims.

5·10 months agoAs the computer nerd in my friends/family circle, Im constantly being gifted old PCs from people. Some I keep and repurpose into servers/other things and others I just recycle for them. I also am an avid PC gamer so when my rig gets retired I usually upgrade the other servers internals from parts I had left over. Don’t know if something else is viable for you to keep costs down, even if you can get the PC without a HDD but everything else.

Not at all, I simply recognize that the argument may have merit as I said. I never said which side of the isle I personally fall on. Also they are a company so theoretically the scrutiny on the methods they use to acquire data is deserved. Data has a price whether you think it should or shouldn’t.
No it does matter where they got the materials. If they illegally downloaded a copy off a website “just cause its on the internet” its still against the law.

Also you can’t copyright as far as I understand it, broad subject matter. So no one can just copyright “wizard” but can copyright “Harry Potter the Wizard”. You also can tell the OpenAI company knows it may be doing something wrong because their latest leak includes passages on how to hide the fact the LLMs trained on copyrighted materials.
Yes, but it’s what it is doing with it that is the murky grey area. Anyone can read a book, but you can’t use those books for your own commercial stuff. Rowling and other writers are making the case their works are being used in an inappropriate way commercially. Whether they have a case iunno ianal but I could see the argument at least.
Lolololololol I’ve had 23 files playing from a Plex server before on my home network. YouTube level? Nope, but what the hell are you talking about? Dailymotion has existed for forever, twitch is a YouTube competitor and has existed forever. you also clearly have forgotten about midi files, those annoying instrumental songs that played on people’s websites? All the rage in the mid 90s. Before you try to condescend you should maybe actually know what you’re talking about.
I don’t. Art is subjective, YouTubers talk about this all the time where 2 YouTubers will do a video on the same topic and for what ever reason 1 will do way better despite being made worse than the other video. People watch what they want to watch
No I quite understand how bandwidth works, you are paying for it because you’re paying Spotify lol, if Spotify get no monies from ads/subs they have no internet, they have no audio library, they have no technicians, they have no developers, your sub PAYS FOR ALL OF THAT. What even is this word salad of corporate boot licking nonsense? Especially in an age where fiber optics bandwidth is more than enough to push those itty bitty 1s and 0s through their lines to their customers.
You’re literally trying to argue the same as when Comcast and Time Warner intentionally slowed Netflix and other video games because “bandwidth”. Here’s again the issue, you pay for your internet, you pay for Spotify, which pays for access AND their internet. If Spotify can’t survive then they should raise their prices not try to hide behind “bandwidth” when we ve been streaming god damn audio since the 90s on copper dial up.

Because the Windows laptop had better hardware, better support for the apps I want to use right now and potential apps in the future, was cheaper, and is easier to repair or expand if I want to in the future.

If you truly believe that it still makes 0 sense to use the violence against the robots who have 0 idea why they’re being attacked and even when destroyed change nothing(because destroying these won’t stop companies from making better more lethal versions).
And that doesn’t change my point because even automated it takes time.
