With all of this in mind i’m down to be critical but this is not enough to warrant the hate.

Is this the new technique because all these companies already completed enshitification? Briefly remove the things people hate in the hopes that it will draw them back, only to rug pull them again?

I do not understand how folks like you get so shitty about Firefox taking Google money for making it a default search engine when that is the very clear, very limited extent of their relationship. This is the definition of “don’t let perfect be the enemy of good.” Because Firefox is pretty damn near perfect. I feel like I have to be missing something here.

What is the issue here? What compromises have they made that make them so irredeemable? If it’s the search default for google that’s just not sufficient IMO.

Google pays Firefox a lot of money to make it the default search engine. It also takes like three clicks to swap it to DDG or something you prefer. If I were Mozilla/Firefox, I would take the money too lol

Tell me a single FLOSS NLE I can use professionally. I’m all ears. Truly.

You only use FLOSS right? What phone do you have? Computer? What apps/software do you use for work and entertainment? Let’s really drill down here. Because if you’re going to drop bombs and attack me you better have your house in order.

I identified the significant hurdles open source NLE’s face. It’s reality. It’s why they aren’t being used professionally at all. If they can’t even reach 10% feature parity they aren’t on the table dude. I have bills, I have obligations. You think a client is going to accept “no I can’t fix that simple problem because my free NLE won’t let me but this other free one that’s closed source does”? Imagine this conversation.

Hobbyists can hack away with these limited tools. It’s why drew that distinction. But i can’t unless I want to quit my career over not using Resolve/Premiere/Avid. You going to end your income over FLOSS?

Yeah especially the rate of improvements right now. It’s wild how many features are added annually. Audio tools alone are going through a meteoric improvement cycle. It’s baffling what I can do now that wasn’t even theorized by the industry 5 years ago.

Resolve is great and the free version is very robust. Don’t try to learn it all. Learn how to import, cut, export. Then learn how to color. Then transform. Whatever you need as you need it.

Their tutorials are also very excellent

Edit: thinking more on this subject, I think if someone really wanted to take a crack at this they need to focus on automatic correction/repair tools.

Long road ahead. Especially with Resolve doing more in a quarter than projects like this do in a few years. I get it’s not meant to compete with Hollywood/commercial grade NLE’s but frankly the gap between them seems to just get wider and wider every year. I feel like most NLE’s that aren’t part of the big 4 (Adobe/Avid/Black Magic/Final Cut limping along) just can’t get past a very simplistic “you can cut and rearrange” proposition. Blender integration is the major exception here, which is admittedly very useful! But idk. I seek more FLOSS/FOSS stuff where I can and NLE’s just always seem so underpowered I can’t justify even learning them.

I just can’t help but call out how the “game changer” is it looks more polished. It’s important to have a good UI/sleek look but “game changer”? I expected to read about a feature/tool.

Edit: I really want to be fair to the developers here, because what they are doing is no small task. But the major hurdle here is convincing people to learn their particular NLE when there are so many out there and a lot of them are a little more standardized but still very distinct with their own learning curves. So every minute you spend learning this one, you’re not learning another one that may be more useful/applicable for what you need. But hey, to those of you who use this software and get use out of it, that’s awesome. I don’t want to discourage folks or act like this thing is useless. i’m just not sure what the future is for projects like this.

I like stellaris a lot except no matter what I do what I try, it is always a mad expansion dash all the time. The AI is relentless at expansion. So the game is just 70% me constantly expanding and exploring. It doesn’t allow for a lot of experimentation lol

I do it in anticipation. It’s not like they sneak up on you like a ninja. They are very clearly around.

Plus it takes like 2 seconds. Unless they got you at gunpoint you’re probably going to have an opportunity to accomplish this. Most people interact with police in the US being pulled over - you’re telling me you can’t lock your phone before they come to your window?

iPhone users:

• DO NOT USE FINGERPRINT unless you absolutely have to for, say, disability reasons.

• if you use facial recognition, don’t. Same as above.

• If you find yourselves in a situation with the police, tap the lock button 5 times. This forces a passcode to open the phone and they cannot (yet) force you to enter a passcode.

Anytime I am filming a protest or anywhere near police, I just tap the lock button a bunch of times in my pocket and I can rest easy.

The nice thing is proton has been slowly making more and more of its codebases open source, and has consistently done the right thing despite whatever winds of change come their way. I have had proton unlimited for about a year now and I am so glad. It was a great way to remove Google from my life but it didn’t require a particularly high level of technical knowledge. It’s a little clunky at times, but honestly it works very well.

Why is that? Genuinely asking, you clearly know more about this than I do.

That’s a good point - voting for it!

For my purposes I have a second proton email for things I may want to keep credentials for which I filter out, and the simple logins are almost always complete burners so I end up deleting half of them anyway. The moment I start getting unwanted spam I touch the simple login accounts and start making new ones.

As someone with many hobbies I get things from all sorts of sites so it’s just kind of necessary if I don’t want to drown in spam lol
