That was probably the intent. It works as a soft layoff. Do something wildly unpopular, knowing that a bunch of employees will quit. The ones left will pick up the slack, because obviously if they had anywhere else to go they would’ve left with the first group.
Was it parasitic? I used it for playing music off of Youtube and it would let me put the screen to sleep and keep playing the music? Did it get enshittifed or is it just that it provided a way around Youtube Premium? I haven’t actually used it in ages, though it still seems to work, it opened up at least.

I’ve run into exactly the same issue with my large ttrpg ebook/pdf collection (+100k file data hoarding… it’s not a problem, I swear) and I’ve not really found a good option I’m entirely happy with. Calibre duplicates everything and I don’t like the thought of having my collection’s organization tied to a specific piece of software if I just delete my duplicates. Plus I’m elitist and think the UI/logo are gross to look at.
Zotero is the least worst option I’ve found, but it’s geared towards scholarly journals and such, so not great, but serviceable. Not sure if it’s on linux though.
Jellyfin is apparently able to handle ebooks with a plugin, though I didn’t particularly care for it when I tried it months ago.
There’s a handful of other ebook software out there, mostly geared towards comics/manga, so depending on what you have those might be worth looking for.
I’d like to use Obsidian for it and just turn the directory into a vault and let it automatically scan the folders for files, but that doesn’t work great either.
The best piece of software I’ve seen that could potentially handle it is an app called Stashapp… which is unfortunately geared towards adult film. But it’s feature-set if it could be applied to PDFs seems like it would be ideal.

I’ve tried at various points to do dailies with different formats and such, but I’m apparently a boring person because I don’t have much to write about on a daily basis. I don’t like using Obsidian for really personal-ish stuff like journaling because it’s all plain-text and I haven’t bothered to encrypt everything. I do use it for taking notes or writing out notes on personal projects I’m working on or new concepts I come across or just general things I want to remember (things I wouldn’t care if somebody stumbled across it). Daily sort of “What did I do this day” notes are kind of weird to me, since nothing of note happens most days and I’m not anticipating being called into court to recount what happened.
I picked up one thing from Nick Milo’s Ideaverse starter vault (or Linking Your Thinking or whatever it’s called now), it’s the idea of “Efforts”. It’s essentially another way of saying “Projects”, but maybe less formal and encapsulates anything and everything I might be working on, dealing with, or putting effort into. If I have to write a paper, brainstorm something, car maintenance, an ongoing responsibility, something needs repaired, I have a dream project, or whatever, I create an effort note and tag it as either Hot, Ongoing, Simmering, or Sleeping, depending on what’s going on with it at the moment. Then I use Dataview tables to sort them on my home note.

I’ve actually been using TiddlyWiki for years as a sort of JobWiki. I went with it because it doesn’t require any special software, just a web browser, it’s stored locally, and it’s relatively easy to use. It hangs out on our network so it’s easily accessible by my workmates or me, it works fairly well and I’ve probably not even scratched the surface of what it can do. I’d like to use Obsidian instead, BUT I think that’s a bridge too far for some people that aren’t tech saavy.
Not sure when it started, but I’ve already noticed some Start Menu fuckery with just the ‘Sign Out’ portion. I believe you previously just clicked on your profile picture/name and the options for signing out were right there. They’ve “helpfully” hidden those options now beneath a ••• menu for no apparent reason. I was a little aggravated when I first noticed it because it seemingly changed out of nowhere. Not a huge change, but it requires one more click to do now.
I use mine exclusively for emulation and ROMs, entire libraries of every single game released for older systems. The SD card I have for that runs them fine without issue. Potentially with newer/bigger games you might come across issues, that I haven’t really done at all.
I’m something of a scientist myself, I say we’ll reach it in 23 years.

There should be a No Vote tax, make it just $1–10 or something small. If you vote, you don’t pay it. Use the money to help pay for administering the elections (wouldn’t cover everything, but it’d help).
I’ve worked for companies that would leave it up to chance without a second thought. I’ve known people that worked there and Amazon doesn’t seem like it cares about its employees. Does it make sense? No, but there’s alot about corporate America that’s pretty dumb.
