It took me 3 weeks to backup my 2TB of data.

Yep, you’re right. I’m watching my ISP upgrade their cable to docsis 4.0 which will allow for 2g down 1g up. Instead of the garbage 1g down 40mbps up I have now. That upload speed is chaffing.
But I’m looking for a new toy like this because my current router is only 1g.
Is there a 2.5 gigabit version?

Technology@lemmy.world•Gmail can read your emails and attachments to train its AI, unless you opt outEnglish
48·9 days agoThere’s a reason it’s enabled by default. So, it automatically has permissions to learn off ~20 years of emails before a handful of people opt-out.
Assuming they even honor the opt-out flag at all. They have a history of conveniently ignoring those.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Interoperability between self-hosted servicesEnglish
5·12 days agoIt sounds like you’re describing Home Assistant? HA has a ton of integrations into a lot of self-hosted services not just IoT devices.
Any cam with an rtsp stream is fine. Host frigate on your server point it to the cams you can get audio and video and object detection pretty easily. I also recommend taking an extra step and creating a firewall rule to block the cams’ inbound/outbound internet traffic.

2·15 days agoThat sucks they’re out for you. Oh hey looks like the ender 3 S1 has auto bed leveling. Haven’t looked into reviews on it.

2·15 days agoAre you looking on the anycubic site?
kobra 3 v2 - $230
https://store.anycubic.com/products/kobra-3-v2
The combo will add ~$100, but that’s just to add the dryer. Nice to have but not needed.
Ender 3 pro- $210

2·15 days agoPersonal choice, I skipped on the ender 3 pro because it didn’t have auto bed leveling. I also grabbed a kobra 3 combo. It’s super nice having the auto bed leveling run before every print. Similar in price too.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Got my robot vacuum running Valetudo the other night...English
11·19 days agoStill sounds easier than getting my roborock on valetudo. I had to take the entire thing apart to get to the other side of the mobo to flash the thing. Felt like I needed 3 hands to ground one place while doing a bunch of other things just to get it to flash. My workspace was a mess of screws and tiny robot parts I only half remembered taking out.
In the end it worked and I’m very happy with it. Was sweating for a bit though. It was a $400 vacuum iirc.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•I think that a simple donation for the NTP Project violates privacy
12·19 days agoThat’s fair. It should be optional. Having made plenty of charitible donations, it’s likely so they can send you thank you cards and solicit more donations from you.
So long as it’s not used for billing, I’ve used plenty of fake addresses for stuff like this. Usually 123 Fake St. Springfield IL in honor of the simpsons.

4·1 month agoI use Pingvin. You upload a file to it and it generates a link. Has expiration on the link.
You can allow anonymous uploads or not, give friends logins etc.
I have it locked down to just me with a login and I use it to let others download the files.

Opensource@programming.dev•What FOSS projects do y'all donate to?
7·1 month agoOnly one I’ve donated to (unfortunately), is Garuda. When I built my gaming PC, I had budgeted money for a copy of windows. But after I built it I was loving my steam deck so much that I had the thought to install linux instead. Garuda is the arch for gaming with the easy install of something like endeavor. Probably mostly marketing, but I love their look too. Gaming has been great on it, and I sent them the windows money. $120 or so iirc.

Cybersecurity@sh.itjust.works•I'm a cyber major, but what should I minor in?English
5·1 month agoMinor in your hobby. College is a great time to learn and use advanced expensive tools. Minor in art, music, woodworking, agriculture science (gardening), mechanical engineering, videogame development, culinary arts, etc.
Don’t have something from above? Consider the future where AI makes your career obsolete. Grab a minor you don’t hate that could be AI proof. Like Landscaping.

homeassistant@lemmy.world•thermostat suitable for Home AsistantEnglish
7·1 month agoYou’re going to hampered in your choices by the lack of wires. You have an old 2 wire setup. Most nowadays want 3. Some can handle 2 wires, look for thermostats that don’t need a “c wire” or “control wire”.

Opensource@programming.dev•Diptyx is an open source, dual-screen eReader (crowdfunding)
12·1 month agoToo bad the front isn’t a screen too. It would be pretty awesome to open a book and automatically slave the front screen to the book’s cover.
Also strange that the dev didn’t enable wifi. That’s just strange. It’s running an esp32, it has a wifi chip and getting it to connect is incredibly easy.
When doing pr reviews, I often also shrug and think: “If it breaks, it’s not my mess to clean up.” Then click Aporoved.
