Hey I know it’s been months, but after the discussion in this thread I built a new computer with a real GPU (I went AMD and I’m using the MESA drivers) and tons of ram, and I am happily running LibreWolf and it’s awesome!
In terms of ram utilization and GPU acceleration on this new machine with modern hardware, Firefox is negligible, as everyone told me it would be!
I’m not a big fan of the NFA either, but its existence exposes the true nature of gun control policies in Cali or NY… To make “progressive” politicians look better during their campaigns without actually affecting their constituents gun control goals.
I personally believe reducing gun violence must start with increasing quality of life in the areas that suffer it the most (eg food, homes, healthcare, etc).
I also think it’s crazy that we don’t have any form of licensing system besides CCW… When that is also proven to not constitute infringement.
I understand that licensing (and taxation specifically) can be used to marginalize people, but I feel like firearms licensing that is as available as a drivers license is a pretty mild concession.
I don’t carry but I got my CCW voluntarily because I believe in licensing and it’s the only form available.
There is one form of gun control that has been effective and stood the test of time: Taxes.
The NFA has been working for almost a hundred years.
If politicians actually wanted to restrict gun ownership (rather than garnering temporary political support via impotent temporary policies the way California does) they’d use the NFA as a template.
As long as it is impossible to get the majority of states to agree to amend the constitution, any policy that infringes on citizens rights to bear arms is temporary at best.
There are decades of precedent in US courts that makes taxes and licensing not an infringement.
I’m using an AMD APU, so just the regular mesa drivers.
The last time I had issues was about a year and a half ago, and I switched to Brave, but a year later (5 months ago) I was convinced to give Ungoogled Chromium another chance by someone here on lemmy (because of all the controversy surrounding Brave).
In the past I always used firefox because its customization features are so much richer, settings werent intrinsically tied to google (or amputated like in ungoogled), and the source code is more comprehensible (firefox is so neatly organized and easy to build yourself, and chromium is a giant mess under the hood).
I really want to use firefox again… maybe I’ll get a dell precision tower off ebay and shove a cheap old nvidia card in it with the proprietary drivers to solve my problems 😅
Youtube is especially egregious. I’ve tried various hardware acceleration settings and h264ify but it really brings my pc to its knees.
Im on linux, and when I run my windows vm (qemu kvm) with either Visual Studio, SQL Server Management Studio, or Fusion 360 in it, firefox on my host machine runnimg youtube just barely pushes it over the edge.
I absolutely recognize how wild what I’m asking this little computer to do is, but I can just get away with it in chromium but not firefox (since the last time I checked)
The day I can do it all with firefox I will be a happy camper
Edit: also, I specifically said games but didn’t name one… FFXIV and Deadlock both crash if I’m running youtube in chrome (and Discord at the same time).
I absolutely agree. I’ll switch to firefox before I look at a single ad, but for now ungoogled chromium still supports full uBo
Yeah, of course ads aren’t an option, but ungoogled chromium still supports mv2 for now and I can’t watch a youtube video and play a video game at the same time with firefox on my machine…
Granted, I’m probably trying to make inadequate hardware do more than it should, but chromium works and I don’t want to upgrade my hardware right now.
Yes I’ve used a variety and rolled my own. Tbh the differences are difficult to measure
Performance like opening a link crashes another application like my vms or cad applications or VS or a game. The performance differences are relatively minor, but it really matters on crappy hardware
MV2 has always worked on ungoogled chromium, so I just use uBo. I agree with most folks that ads are not an option XD
I did my testing before the AI features were implemented, and I tested a variety of custom profile settings for firefox (and floorp and librefox) and custom chrome flags for ungoogled chromium (and brave)…
Granted, I was using benchmarks, but the differences are somewhere around 15-30% on my machine on Arch
I see a lot of comments (justifiably) touting firefox’s superiority… but the performance difference is night and day.
My main pc has very weak hardware, and my browser is the most resource intensive application I run. In my environment, I can’t leave firefox open with other heavy apps running simultaneously, but I can leave chrome open.
I’ve used firefox for decades in the past, but the gap is huge and it doesn’t look like Mozilla will make the engine changes necessary to close it. Idk if things have changed, but I remember when they axed the Servo team.
I’ve been using Ungoogled Chromium and I’m hoping this doesn’t affect me for a while… but if I have to choose between ads and closing my browser to run heavy apps, I guess I’ll be reinstalling firefox.
This was my first concern as well… Although I suppose you could do some test prints to collect values to change the simulation.
If I were printing something really big, I’d probably run a sim first even if it were inaccurate, just to see if there is an obvious problem.
I’m not sure this would help new people much though, since you’d have to be very familiar with your printer/printing to use a simulation anyway.
Idk I haven’t seen an AI that writes acceptable C/C++ yet (to be honest I haven’t looked that hard)… So as long as my projects focus is low level, thin, maintainable code, I can still do things AI won’t be able to for a long time.
I recognize that being free to write code however I want makes me privileged, and others don’t have that freedom.
Despite that, I am afraid of what will happen to the open source tools I depend on. None of us write our code alone.
